Pakistan's central bank is known as the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). Its constitution, as initially constituted in the State Bank of Pakistan Order of 1948, remained largely unchanged until the bank was nationalized on January 1, 1974, at which point its scope was significantly expanded.
Today's activities of the State Bank of Pakistan are based on the 1956 State Bank of Pakistan Act, as amended throughout time. Its main office is in Karachi, Pakistan's financial hub. The central bank's operating arm, SBP Banking Services Corporation (SBP-BSC), is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the bank with branches in 16 cities around Pakistan, including the country's capital, Islamabad, and the four provincial capitals.
